Early Literacy Screener

Early Literacy Screener

Screening for our students in grades 1-2 happens in September while screening for our kindergarten students happens in December.

The screener consists of two assessments called “DIBELS” and “RAN/RAS.” The results help teachers identify strengths and needs for each student, ensuring targeted and supportive instruction over the course of the school year.

This information is one snapshot in time, and is used in conjunction with other reading data to create a comprehensive picture of each child’s progress. Our teachers use this information to help them target instruction in the class based on student needs.

As you think about supporting your young reader’s growth at home, here are some helpful strategies to consider:

  • Establish a positive reading routine at home. Aim for 20 minutes a day.
  • Allow children to choose books that are of interest to them.
  • Ask questions as you read. Help your child think about what they are reading.
  • Play rhyming and word games, such as rhyming bingo or rhyming memory.
  • Have your child write stories and read them aloud to you.We appreciate family partnership in supporting our young readers.
