Special education reopening plan underway

Special education reopening plan underway

An Aug. 3 message from Superintendent Mike Hanson:

Dear Tahoma Community,

Although schools are still out for summer break, Tahoma staff continue busily preparing for the new school year so that we will be ready to start strong on day one.

We know how important it is to meet the unique needs of every student so that they can be successful. That’s why the needs of our Tahoma students receiving Special Education services are being discussed and planned for throughout the reopening process.

Special Education teachers and therapists have been part of the ongoing planning about what worked in the spring and what is needed to help improve instruction for all students this fall. The elementary, middle, and high school schedule models that are being finalized include planning for remote instruction and therapy for students with IEPs (Individualized Education Plans) within those models. Students will access both their general education classes with peers, as well as their special education services and accommodations within the remote learning models during the first nine weeks of school. For a few students, the remote model does not allow access to services, so county and state health officials are helping districts develop protocols for determining when campus access might be available as well as how to determine which students should have that access, using protective equipment and protocols. For health reasons, some students will not be able to access in-person learning when available; Tahoma will provide equitable services to those students.

This week, we’re looking forward to a discussion of the July 30 Special Education Guidance for Reopening materials with our state Assistant Superintendent and Special Education Director, Glenna Gallo. This discussion will include updated brainstorming from neighboring districts as we plan how to implement this guidance for both the remote and hybrid instructional models.

We look forward to working with families on individual planning for students, as well as sharing broader system plans over the next few weeks.

In case you missed my email last week  providing an update on our online learning plans, you can read it here. And, if you would like to read the information I sent on childcare, find that message here.

On Thursday, I will share the latest information on technology.

With Tahoma pride,

Mike Hanson
Superintendent
