Hi Tahoma families! My name is Malia Hollowell and I’m proud to be one of your five school board directors.

Like many of you, my husband and I are eager for our three children to continue learning and growing while schools are closed. So today, I’m excited to highlight Tahoma’s 3 phase plan for making that happen.

The three phases are: Learning Connections, Teacher Connections and Remote Learning.

As you know, last week, our Teaching and Learning Department began Phase 1 when they launched Learning Connections – a site they designed to share educational activities for students in Pre-K through 12th grade.

Having all of us actively engaged in our kids’ education these next few weeks will be critical to their success so Learning Connections provides a weekly batch of tools and resources we can use to keep our students engaged.

I’m eager for all of us to experience firsthand how wonderful it is to see kids have those magical “ah-ha” moments.

Our dedicated Teaching and Learning team has already moved into Phase 2: Teacher Connections. We know how important it is for our children to feel safe and supported so teachers have begun emailing with families to provide critical connections during this uncertain time.

Additionally, we established a mental health program so students and parents can receive essential support from school counselors during normal school hours.

And, to ensure that ALL of our children have access to online learning, faculty and staff have loaned out more than 1,200 computers to students and, by the end of this week, 200 more computers will be distributed to paraeducators so that they can support our students with additional needs.

While we are currently in Phase 2, we’re not stopping there! We have big goals for Tahoma students and so we’re excited to also outline Phase 3 called “Remote Learning” which will begin rolling out soon.

In order to ensure that all of our students continue to learn and grow during the closure, our extraordinary teachers will begin teaching online lessons and will hold daily office hours so that students can connect with them throughout the school day.

While this third phase is not a replacement for the power of face-to-face connections, we believe it is an exciting next step in helping our students continue to thrive during this unique time.

Like so many things in the world right now, there is no roadmap for taking our learning online. But I have been deeply moved to see our faculty, staff and administrators work tirelessly these last few weeks to create a program that will help our students continue to learn and grow while we remain closed.

I hope you’ll join me in thanking them. It’s so wonderful to be a part of this caring community.
