All 6 Elementary Schools Earn CS100 All In Award
Posted on 04/20/2023

CSisElementary and CSforAll announced earlier this month the inaugural group of 160 schools receiving CS100 Awards. Among them were all six elementary schools in the Tahoma School District: Cedar River, Glacier Park, Lake Wilderness, Rock Creek, Shadow Lake and Tahoma Elementary School. Tahoma’s six elementary schools were the only six schools in Washington state to receive the CS100 Award.

CS100 Awards recognize elementary schools that commit to teaching at least ten hours per year of computer science (CS) to every K-5 student. The Awards were announced March 30, 2023 at CSK5, The National Summit for K-5 Computer Science Education. Award-winning schools submitted 90-second videos describing their programs, five of which were featured at the CSK5 Summit. Tahoma’s video was one of the five selected to be shown at the Summit.

90% of award-winning schools utilized the same model that Tahoma uses: one or more Specialist teachers to reach all students in all grades K-5. Each Tahoma elementary school has a dedicated STEM specialist who teaches CS along with other topics such as engineering and robotics.

Tahoma’s STEM specialist classes are funded in part through the voter-approved Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) levy, which passed in 2020 and is set to expire in 2024.
