Tahoma dance: Year-round school spirit extraordinaires

The sun is not up yet. The air is brisk, and the Tahoma High School main gym is already filled with that unbeatable THS dance team energy. The team meets before school three days each week to prepare dance routines for sporting events, school spirit events and competitions.


The team is excited for the first performance of the season, this Friday, Sept. 17, at the varsity football home game against Kentlake during halftime. They are practicing and coordinating their routine to have a crisp, spirit-filled performance to get the community excited at the game. 


“Dance is part of school spirit and cheering them on,” senior Megan Hatch said.

At the beginning of each school year, members of the dance team start preparing for the full-year activity. They perform during the intermission of multiple sports competitions and events. Starting in November, they switch gears to competition season, with two competitions per month through February and the state competition in March. Junior Katelyn Raybell is currently injured, but shows her dedication by coming to practices to provide support and feedback to her teammates. She says it helps her stay up-to-date with the dance routines, so that when she is cleared to return, she can smoothly return to the routine.


“The dancers on the team are all such hardworking and dedicated individuals. Being a year-round activity, that kind of dedication is so important,” Odegard said.


Hatch agreed, noting, “It’s a commitment, and we are all working here together. It’s more than dancing. We are here, building relationships.”


Putting relationships at the center of their work as a team, frames this type of team dancing in a different way from what many of the dancers have experienced in other settings.


Senior Taylor Bentley said, “I have been at other dance places that are competitive, but here we work to be better together. We are all helping each other to get better.”


The team collaboration and their level of collective positivity is demonstrated again at the end of practice. The coaches provide performance feedback to the team, and the team captains offer suggestions about how to improve the routine. After listening to the feedback, the team members break down the segments to clean up and conclude by running the routine with the improvements. As practice ends, just before the school day starts, the progress the team has made is clear. A sense of pride fills the space, as the dancers head off to their first class, bringing that can't-beat dance team energy to the entire school.
