School Board Director: Position 2 Appointment Application Open

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2022, the Tahoma School Board accepted Michael Wiggins’ resignation from Position 2, which was announced on Jan. 17. Below is the process and timeline for the appointment of a new director.

The school board is now responsible for appointing a replacement to Position 2 within 90 days (from Jan. 28). School Board Policy 1114 and Washington State RCW 28A.343.370 require that appointees who fill vacancies, “shall serve until the next regular school district election, at which time a successor shall be elected for the unexpired term.” This means that the board is responsible for appointing a director who will serve until the next regular election in Nov. 2025. The position will then be filled by election through Nov. 2027 to complete the current term of office. In Nov. 2027, voters will select a candidate to serve a new 4-year term through Nov. 2031.

The application for the appointment of School Board Director Position 2 is now open through Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 4:30 PM. To be eligible for appointment, candidates must reside within District 2 of the Tahoma School District boundaries. To determine if you reside in District 2, see the district map HERE.

Currently, the board intends to interview candidates in an open public meeting on Friday, Feb. 28. There will be a public nomination and vote for an appointee on Tuesday, March 4, and the oath of office is scheduled for Tuesday, March 11.
