School Board Update, Jan. 19, 2022
Posted on 01/19/2022

Last night, the Tahoma School Board accepted Valerie Paganelli’s resignation from Board Director Position 5, effective Feb. 28. We sincerely thank Ms. Paganelli for her service and dedication to the board, district and community in her four-plus years as a director. During that time, she collaborated with those groups to establish the Tahoma CARES goals that will continue to drive our work through 2025. She brings a valuable finance background and a tenacity to her position, and her absence won’t go unnoticed by the board.

When a small group of passionate leaders – many of whom are parents to Tahoma children – are tasked with making crucial decisions that will impact nearly 9,000 students, 1,200 staff, and a community of families, it is expected that we will all bring our own perspective to the conversation. It can be difficult to check our emotions at the door because we all care deeply about Tahoma students and the district’s future. That said, there is a process for bringing items to our public agenda, and the decisions that determine what can and cannot be brought to that public agenda are bound by law.

Going forward, the four remaining board directors, and eventually a new director in Position 5, will continue to hold the responsibility of asking critical questions of each other and our district leadership.

The four remaining directors also consist of two moms and two dads, including a pair of former teachers, an attorney and a forensic accountant, all with their own families and Tahoma students. We are “all in” on upholding Tahoma’s stature as a top-tier district in Washington state, and we will not stray from the Tahoma CARES goals that we are confident will positively impact our district for years to come.

Per board policies, the remaining directors will be tasked with publicly interviewing and selecting a candidate to fill Position 5 through Nov. 2023. That process cannot begin until March 1 when the position is officially vacant. We will then share more information with our community about the application process. We are excited to see the wide spectrum of life experiences and opinions that the candidates offer. Our Tahoma family is strongest when all voices are heard.

In partnership,

Malia Hollowell, Board President

Pete Miller, Board Vice President

Haley Pendergraft, Director Position 1

Michael Wiggins, Director Position 2
