School board adopts 2010-2011 budget

Tahoma School directors approved the school district's 2010-2011 operating budget July 27, which sets spending at $66,040,235. Last year, the board approved a budget that reflected sharp reductions in state funding, which resulted in spending and staffing reductions. The new budget is about $1.8 million higher than last year and will use $1.2 million from the district’s reserve fund balance, a small increase in state funding (compared to last year) and anticipated revenue from the local school levy that was approved by voters last February. No staff layoffs will occur this year and administrators and classified employees who took pay cuts last year will see their compensation restored to 2008-2009 levels.

The district will continue to keep a tight rein on spending for supplies, energy and contracted services. A successful grant to replace lighting in three schools with energy efficient light fixtures, as well as ongoing conservation efforts, will help the district continue its success in reducing energy costs.
