School board approves snow makeup days
The Tahoma School Board voted Jan. 24 to add three days in June to the school calendar to make up for three of the four days that schools were closed on Jan. 17-20, due to ice, snow and power outages. June 20 will be the last day of school. The fourth day will be made up on Jan. 27, which is a regular full day of school.
Quick answers to three main questions we have heard:
- Why not make up the snow days during the February break? The school calendar is part of contract bargaining between the district and its employee bargaining units; there is discussion each year about modifying the February break but no agreement to do so, which means it cannot be used for makeup days.
- Won't the state waive the days that were part of the governor's emergency declaration? The state Superintendent of Public Instruction has not decided whether waiver days can be granted for the snow closures; more on this when a decision is made.
- How will the makeup days affect graduation? High school seniors will have to make up one day but their graduation date does not change. Seniors and families will be notified when the makeup day is chosen.
